Not to bind sheets but to join tissues and wounds also called surgical staples. Let’s find out when and how it was invented.

The growing need for paper around the 19th century created a huge demand for an efficient paper binder that can hold multiple pages together.

George McGill in 1866 invented a small, bendable brass paper fastener which was a precursor to present-day modern staple and got patented later on under US patent.

The modern stapler was invented by Henry R. Heyl in 1877, it was the first machine to insert and clinch a staple in just one step.

Commercial stapler rolled out in 1879. This device weighed around two and a half pounds which is almost a kilogram in weight. It also loaded a single 1/2-inch-wide wire staple, which could drive through several sheets of paper.

The word stapler was first used in an advertisement in the American Munsey’s Magazine (1901).

Modern staplers have evolved as per changing habits of users.

Some of the modern desktop staplers use “Flat Clinch technology”. In Flat Clinch staplers, the staple legs pierce the paper first and are then bent over and then pressed flat against the paper. This may sound a bit complex but it is nothing much but a stapler we use nowadays.
